Notes:
Hi. My name is Zanipolo. I’ve been told it means “ little gift from God”. I got my new name because I survived a very scary accident. On July 15th, a rattlesnake bit me in my neck. Ouch! It hurt! My owners said they did not have any money to treat my bite and left me in the backyard for 3 hot summer days. On the third day, my neck was as big as my head and the bite became very infected. The venom was coursing thru my body and I was very sick. Most dogs would have died by now, but I just kept praying that someone would help me. My owners decided that they could not stand the smell from my wound any longer and took me to the Bonita Animal Shelter. You see, my flesh was actually rotting. That’s what happens when a rattlesnake bites you. The venom is very toxic and destroys tissue. Once at the shelters, I heard the officer’s say that I needed medical ASAP or I would die. I was scared, but I kept my hopes up. The officer made a couple of calls and then this nice man came to get me. He told me “Oh poor baby. Let’s get you to the vet”. He lifted me into his car and patted my head. He said, “It’ll be alright”. He took me to see a nice doctor named Dr. Martin. They were so nice to me and did not mind that my wound had ruptured and was oozing all over the floor. They just cleaned it up and kept telling me what a brave boy I was.
Dr. Martin told the nice man and his rescue friends that I needed to have surgery right away. I heard him tell the rescue people that it would cost a lot of money. The rescue people all were very quiet and looked at me with great concern as Dr. Martin explained that it would be understandable if they put me to sleep because of the cost involved to save me. The rescue people all looked at each other and said: “ let’s help him. He deserves better than this”.
Well, I’m a lucky boy! I’m healing and I get 24-hour attention at the vet’s office. But now, I want to help these nice people too. You see, other dogs under the rescues care need surgery too. Not as life threatening as mine, but they put all the other surgeries on hold to save my life. I guess my vet bill is very BIG and still growing. I heard them say it costs $1,200.00 just for the first day. I don’t know how much that is, but I bet it buys a lot of dog treats. I have to be at the vet’s office for 2 weeks and might need another surgery. If there is any way that you can help them pay for my surgery, I would really appreciate it. I’m so thankful for the kind rescue people, but I want to give back to them. And the best part is: when I’m all better, they are going to find me a new family and home to love me. UPDATE: Zanipolo is fully recovered and ready to be adopted. He is doing well with his obedience training. He is a dominant dog and will require an experienced owner. We don't recommend small children because of his dominance. He would do best as an only dog or with a submissive large breed female. Out of state adoptions considered if within driving distance. We DO NOT ship dogs out of state.
If you'd like to adopt Zanipolo, please fill out an adoption application.
