  Training : Excessive Barking
Nuisance barking not only annoys you, but your neighbors as well. Teaching your puppy from the beginning what "No" means will definitely help to eliminate future problems.

If you have a grown "barker" you will need to start right away to teach it to respond to "No." You may even have to set up situations that need to be resolved such as excessive barking when the doorbell rings, phone rings, or when people or dogs walk by the yard. A firm and consistent correction using a squirt water bottle, quick snap of the leash or spray from the garden hose, while simultaneously using the word "No", will get your dog's response - the response being to stop barking. Praising your dog immediately afterward is its reward for responding. Do this consistently and your dog will learn what "No" means, and will soon respond to you every time.

You will not be able to train your dog to never bark. People ask me if, by correcting their dog for excessive barking, the dog will then not bark to warn of intruders. A dog will bark whenever it is stimulated to do so. However, if you are not there to correct your dog from barking, it will learn to bark and this is where most owners experience this problem (and why their neighbors keep calling the authorities).

For those of you with dogs that only bark when you are not around, a highly effective and very humane anti-bark collar is available through our company and on our website. It is called the Gentle Spray Anti-Bark Citronella Collar which is described below .The manufacturer only sells to Trainers and Veterinarians thus explaining why, in the beginning, it was hard for me to locate it let alone get much information as far as it's effectiveness, safety and cost. The great news is that, after several years of using this collar, we have found it to be extremely effective. So far we have experienced a success rate of slightly more that 90%!

Shock collars, high-frequency collars - these in my opinion are a waste of money. I have seen many dogs ruined by shock collars and more often than not neither of these devices offer long-term results.

Gentle Spray Citronella Collar/Spray Commander Remote Dog Training Collar

Your dog hears it, sees it, feels it, and most importantly, smells it. Through this harmless conditioned response, Gentle Spray discourages your dog from barking. 88.9% of owner's who participated in a comparison study reported satisfaction. (Juarbe-Diaz, Houpt KA, Comparison of Two Anti-barking Collars for Treatment of Nuisance barking. J Am An-m Hosp Assoc 1996;32;231-5.)
