Tribute to Rowan
I had Rowan to the vet in April for her annual checkup and all was fine. Over the past 2.5 years, she had several skin growths removed, 3 surgeries total. Some were mast cell tumors, others benign lumps. All MCTs had clean margins. On Memorial weekend, I found a small one on her belly, the usual. I knew to keep close watch on it, but it never changed. About two weeks ago, I found several larger ones and the lymph nodes in her throat were enlarged. The vet said that she had probably been fighting it for several months and her system couldn't fight any longer. My boyfriend, a pathologist, and I are still shocked by how rapidly it progressed-a matter of days. When I came home from work last Wednesday, her breathing was labored and for the first time, I could see that she was in pain. I ended her struggle with the aggressive cancer Thursday afternoon. She passed peacefully in my arms on her comfy couch. When other rescues rejected me because I had never owned a dog before, you two were kind enough to allow me to adopt Rowan. After learning how to work with an abused dog, the two of us bonded and in time, she blossomed into the playful, confident and well-mannered lady she was inside all along. Although my heart is heavy with her loss, I wanted to thank you both for one of my most rewarding experiences. I learned so much from her and her spirit touched all who knew her. I wish you could have seen her transformation. Here's a photo I found of her lounging after her walk. My home is so empty without her. Colleen |
