Operation K9 Rescue News and Events Our weekly informal obedience classes started this saturday and we had a blast! We only got to work three together , Mona, Hannah and Fiona because the kennel was in lockdown because of kennel cough. We started off with some very basic information, uses of different type collars, how to put them on, when to put them on when not to, proper technique of holding a leash. Then we advanced to walking on lead, how to give corrections and what the handler should do on a walk. Next step was the sit command. This was the fun part, we had some comments from the peanut gallery because it was very evident that Fiona was a ringer and has had training previously. While the other dogs were working on the basic sit, and sit stay, Fiona was already doing sit stay with major distraction of handler circling, and she got an A+. We took a group walk and every one did great. I can't wait for the next class, we will do a refresher and go onto the next command. Each of the participants that helped were also assigned homework with their own dogs each night while they watched TV with their own furkids. Next weeks class will have a special Valentine's Day contest and prizes! After the obedience class, everyone had an informal discussion on issues impacting our breeds, such as the new commercial with the ddb in it and what the outpour will mean to us as rescuers, also the Hogwatching-Humane Society Protests AZ AB Event should be interesting to see what comes from this. We also discussed health issues such as kennel cough. We also did a Q & A, and Pete brought up a good question about the difference between the pitbull and the am staff. So we suggested Molosserworld's Bull and Terrier's Page for information and pictures. As always, there are always going to be errors/inaccuracies in information, or some % within a specified breed that are not the "norm". The obedience class will be held weekly on saturdays with an informal discussion afterwords. THe class is open to volunteers who want to help work rescue dogs as well as new adopters who want some support and assistance with their new addition! So if you are interested in participating, email us! Don't forget that this is different than the upcoming formal training program with guest speakers and lectures. (date to be announced) Upcoming events: Open house Sat. Feb 21 The open house will be at san marcos and we will set a table with information on our breeds. ALL rescued bordeaux's from any organization are welcome to this show (as long as they are well behaved, not dog aggressive). So if you know anyone who has adopted a bordeaux, please let them know about this. They can register on line at www.ddbs.org for the rescue parade. For a small $10 fee (that goes to rescue) they can also show their dog in the spay/neuter class. |
